What is a transponder?

Wiktionary defines a transponder as “a radio or radar transceiver that transmits some signal in response to receiving a predetermined signal

What does this mean, and what does it have to do with BMX?

In BMX, transponders are a device fitted to your bike, which automatically indicate the precise time that the rider passes certain points on the race track, usually the Start Hill and the Finish Line.

They work much like an e-tag on your car, transmitting a signal when you pass particular points on the track. These signals are picked up and processed by some fairly sophisticated equipment which is capable of scoring riders to an accuracy of a few 1000ths of a second.

Why MyLaps Sports Timing transponders?

There are lots of different transponder systems on the market today? Why did BMXV go with MyLaps?

Quite simply they’re the best system out there. The sports that use MyLaps transponders include, MotoGP, World Superbikes, the World MX Championships, Indy Cars, NASCAR, the World Enduro Championship and various Olympic sports. In cycling they’re used at various Grand Tours, and in BMX at World, National, and State levels.

If I buy my own transponder can I use it elsewhere?

Once you buy your own MyLaps Sports Timing transponder you can use it at any of the above listed BMX events where they’re using transponder timing.

Will I save money by purchasing my own transponder?

If you race at the National Titles, Champbikx/Probikx Series, and most State Titles, plus an increasing number of major Open race meetings, you will be charged a hire fee for a transponder if you do not have your own one. If you have a personal MyLaps Sports Timing transponder you don’t pay for the hire of one.

Having a personal transponder is like having an e-tag on your car, except every time you use it you save money
